Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
