Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
